Folk in the Community
Over the past couple of years, Stonehaven Folk Club has tried to become more involved in the local community, hoping that in response the local community might become more involved with the Club. Hence was born the “Folk in the Community” project.
This project has several activities:
- where our professional club guests are available on Friday afternoons, we pay them an extra fee to visit one of the local schools to present their music and song to the kids, and answer a few questions and talk about their life and career. To date we have visited all schools within Stonehaven several times. Feedback has been very positive. Logistics mean that it is difficult to visit schools outwith the town but we hope to remedy that in future. We also hope that in the future some of our local amateur performers can visit schools to entertain, or even involve the children in some kind of musical workshop.
- local performers take part in various local events. In the past we have been involved with The Heritage fair, Feein Market, Pensioners Concert and several others. We have invitations to perform at several of these events in the coming months.
- folk club members have formed a choir at various times. At the end of 2010 we rehearsed Christmas Carols then entertained at various Care Homes in the lead up to Christmas. In total we had 9 performances – again well received. Currently (March 2011) we are rehearsing to form a Concert Party which can visit local Homes or events with a range of music and song.
We were very fortunate in 2010 to be win an award from the Big Lottery fund, which enabled us to replace our old and heavy PA and Staging, with modern modular equipment, which is portable and easily erected whenever required in our project.
We are open to requests for performances, or suggestions of how we can better be involved with our community. If you do have any suggestions, please email
