Folk Club Sessions - "Open Mic" nights!
In September 2005, as an experiment for session nights, we had our first "Open Mic" session. The idea behind this is that it will give performers the opportunity to present a short set of numbers in a professional way in front of a live audience. It was so successful, we have decided to have these every couple of months. Planned dates so far are:
5 May 2006 16 June 2006
You will have an opportunity to "present yourself" and to share your singing, song-writing, and musical talent. Or maybe it is a chance for you to try out some new ideas. Alternatively it may be a way to work on your presentation, or build up experience and confidence in front of a live audience to a level where you are able to do the occasional floor spot or move on to public performances.
"Open Mic" means being out in front of the audience, introduced by a "host" and with PA system available if required. You will have 15 minutes or so to present your "set". This is in contrast to the regular sessions where we simply take turns round the table. All kinds of song, music, instruments or recitations are welcome, and in particular we hope to see some younger people trying out their skills.
We hope that those who are regular professional performers or who have already done a few floor spots at guest nights will come along and show the rest of us how it is done. Of course if you don't feel up to it, then you will be welcome to be part of the "appreciative audience" for the Open Mic period then join in the regular round in the latter part of the evening. You will always learn by watching, but how about getting together with someone else in order to get over that hurdle of first stage performance?
At the end of the Open Mic session or when there are no more performers, we will revert to our normal "round the table, one number per performer" session.
So if you are a musician, amateur or pro and looking for a friendly place to perform, you've found it - Stonehaven Folk Club Open Mic Night
Everyone is welcome (members and non-members) and entrance is free.
