FOLK IN CRISIS FUND

About the Fund

Stonehaven Folk Club recognised the catastrophic impact that Covid-19 was having on Scottish Folk Artists and their crew’s incomes. To help address this impact, the Club teamed up with Hands Up for Trad to launch the Folk in Crisis Fund  to help support Folk musicians and music production staff living in Scotland during the crisis.

A total of £21,510 was raised since Stonehaven Folk Club and Hands up for Trad launched the Folk in Crisis Fund in April 2020. Around 100 folkies have benefited from a grant or concert fee.

Two 'Stoney Tune & Song-a-Thon' concerts were held:

  • The first concert was held on Friday 20th Nov 2020 featuring:

Paul McKenna

Fiona Hunter & Mike Vass

Spiers Family

Ellie Beaton

Claire Hastings

Cameron Nixon & Rory Matheson

Kenny Speirs

Tripple

  • The second concert was held on Friday 26th March 2021 featuring:

Adam Sutherland & John Somerville

Siobhan Miller & Euan Burton

Emily Smith & Jamie McClennan

Aaron Jones & Claire Mann

Alan Reid

Anna Massie

Hannah Rarity

The remaining funds were used to help finance a concert The New Tradition: Rejuvenation at Celtic Connections. The concert was held on Saturday 22nd January 2022. Hands Up for Trad, Stonehaven Folk Club and Celtic Connections came together to give an opportunity to seven young musicians to make a new piece of music. They could take pieces from the tradition or write new music - it was up to them! The music was performed by a band of their peers and the musical director was pianist Rory Matheson, and was a great concert from the next generation of musicians, including:

Ailis Sutherland

Cameron Nixon

Chloë Bryce

Ellie McLaren

Evie Waddell

Isla Callister

John Dew

The Folk in Crisis Fund was wound up in January 2021.

A huge thanks to all who donated to the Fund!

RAFFLES FOR UKRAINE

In May & June 2022, Stonehaven Folk Club held 2 raffles to raise money for humanitarian aid in Ukraine. The total amount raised (including the Folk Club contribution) was £1,500!

All proceeds from the raffle have gone to Disasters Emergency Fund to be used to support people who are really suffering.  Donations are helping DEC charities provide food, water, shelter and healthcare to refugees and displaced families.

Our thanks go to all the local shops and businesses who donated prizes. A list of shops, cafes and businesses who donated can be found here.   Their generosity and good will is greatly appreciated and if you were a winner you will enjoy some of the local produce and generous prizes they donated.
